Weblog 11/22

The reason that I chose to right about this article that I have found is because I realized I had pretty much bashed social media in almost all of my blog posts.  This article is about the Cleveland Bike Composting project which asks people online to participate in bike-based compost removal service for Cleveland residents so that they can create a cleaner, greener environment for the vicinity of Cleveland.  If this project actually works out then there will be volunteers that will have to take the waste from the site and then transfer it to someone’s compost in their garden.  This will not only benefit the person getting rid of the waste but it will also benefit the person that is receiving the waste because when you have a garden, superior topsoil is key to having a great garden.  My family always has a designated area in their yard for a compost pile for their gardens,  but because my family is so big, this service really wouldn’t apply to me since we have been recycling our compost for a long time.  I think that the way that this article is presented is great.  I think that it’s author doesn’t ask too much from the reader and that it all comes down to doing something that you love, like riding your bike, and helping out the earth in so many different ways, including riding a bike instead of using gas with a car, recycling the waste through transporting the waste to someone’s garden, and saving the use of gas by promoting locally grown vegetables.  I think that this article is a great way to use the internet.

My Digital Story Proposal

The theme for my digital story will be all of the affects of cyber bullying and what it takes to stop it.  This theme relates to our digital media and social justice class because it brings together what is right and wrong and the broad universe of social media.  This really interested me because of a recent story about Jonathan Martin, a Miami Dolphins football player.  The story seems to be on my television, phone, and computer as soon as I turn one of them on.  I think that this isn’t exactly related to my topic but it is definitely somewhat related because of the fact that bullying in itself can and probably has affected someone in some kind of way.  In the particular story that I mentioned, Jonathan Martin is a 6 foot 6, 310 pounds, full grown, gargantuan of a man.  He has recently been bullied and even threatened by one of his teammates Ritchie Incognito. Reporter James Walker from Espn reported that Incognito left a voicemail for Jonathan Martin saying,” "Hey, wassup, you half n----- piece of s---. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [I want to] s--- in your f---ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your f---ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your real mother across the face [laughter]. F--- you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you."  This is uncalled for and a main reason for me to do a story on this subject of bullying.  This just further proves that anyone can be bullied no matter how big, strong, famous, or rich they are.  I am going to try to accomplish resources of different scenarios of instances where cyber bullying is relevant and bring my life into it while trying to put my perspective on both the real life situation that I have witnessed or have been in and the articles that I am going to research.

For my digital story I originally thought that I was going to create my digital story by using a website.  I thought that creating a website would most likely relate to me for some reason.  I didn’t really know a reason at the time, but I just figured I would end up doing a website of some kind.  I really had not researched what else I could do since I was kind of set on doing a website.  However, after doing some research and after seeing other presentations on prezi.com, I thought that this could be a really interesting way to present my topic in the future.  I then looked up some average reviews of the website and found that there are some downsides, but the overall consensus was positive.  Ed Mendelson of Pcmag.com says that,” Prezi's presentations give you tools that no other presentation software can match…an animated visual feast unlike the usual boring set of bullet points.”  When I read this I kind of ignored anything else and took what he said and thought that making a Prezi would be a great way for me to present my digital story.  Mendelson’s overall review was 4.5 out of 5.  I thought that this review alone could change my mind just doing a website, but I looked a few different reviews after that.  After finding mostly positive reviews for Prezi.com, I really didn’t even put creating a website into consideration.  I will try to use the resources from the library that are given on the John Carroll website.  I have used most of the databases that are available previously for some other projects that I have done for my high school.  If for some reason I cannot find what I am looking for I will go to the library reference desk and ask for help.
