The
reason that I chose to right about this article that I have found is because I realized
I had pretty much bashed social media in almost all of my blog posts. This article is about the Cleveland Bike
Composting project which asks people online to participate in bike-based
compost removal service for Cleveland residents so that they can create a
cleaner, greener environment for the vicinity of Cleveland. If this project actually works out then there
will be volunteers that will have to take the waste from the site and then transfer
it to someone’s compost in their garden.
This will not only benefit the person getting rid of the waste but it
will also benefit the person that is receiving the waste because when you have
a garden, superior topsoil is key to having a great garden. My family always has a designated area in their
yard for a compost pile for their gardens,
but because my family is so big, this service really wouldn’t apply to me
since we have been recycling our compost for a long time. I think that the way that this article is
presented is great. I think that it’s
author doesn’t ask too much from the reader and that it all comes down to doing
something that you love, like riding your bike, and helping out the earth in so
many different ways, including riding a bike instead of using gas with a car,
recycling the waste through transporting the waste to someone’s garden, and
saving the use of gas by promoting locally grown vegetables. I think that this article is a great way to
use the internet.

My
Digital Story Proposal
The
theme for my digital story will be all of the affects of cyber bullying and
what it takes to stop it. This theme
relates to our digital media and social justice class because it brings
together what is right and wrong and the broad universe of social media. This really interested me because of a recent
story about Jonathan Martin, a Miami Dolphins football player. The story seems to be on my television,
phone, and computer as soon as I turn one of them on. I think that this isn’t exactly related to my
topic but it is definitely somewhat related because of the fact that bullying
in itself can and probably has affected someone in some kind of way. In the particular story that I mentioned,
Jonathan Martin is a 6 foot 6, 310 pounds, full grown, gargantuan of a
man. He has recently been bullied and
even threatened by one of his teammates Ritchie Incognito. Reporter James
Walker from Espn reported that Incognito left a voicemail for Jonathan Martin
saying,” "Hey, wassup, you half n----- piece of s---. I saw you on
Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [I want to] s--- in your f---ing mouth.
[I'm going to] slap your f---ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your real mother
across the face [laughter]. F--- you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill
you." This is uncalled for and a
main reason for me to do a story on this subject of bullying. This just further proves that anyone can be
bullied no matter how big, strong, famous, or rich they are. I am going to try to accomplish resources of
different scenarios of instances where cyber bullying is relevant and bring my
life into it while trying to put my perspective on both the real life situation
that I have witnessed or have been in and the articles that I am going to
research.
For
my digital story I originally thought that I was going to create my digital
story by using a website. I thought that
creating a website would most likely relate to me for some reason. I didn’t really know a reason at the time,
but I just figured I would end up doing a website of some kind. I really had not researched what else I could
do since I was kind of set on doing a website.
However, after doing some research and after seeing other presentations
on prezi.com, I thought that this could be a really interesting way to present
my topic in the future. I then looked up
some average reviews of the website and found that there are some downsides,
but the overall consensus was positive. Ed
Mendelson of Pcmag.com says that,” Prezi's presentations give you tools that no
other presentation software can match…an animated visual feast unlike the usual
boring set of bullet points.” When I
read this I kind of ignored anything else and took what he said and thought
that making a Prezi would be a great way for me to present my digital
story. Mendelson’s overall review was
4.5 out of 5. I thought that this review
alone could change my mind just doing a website, but I looked a few different
reviews after that. After finding mostly
positive reviews for Prezi.com, I really didn’t even put creating a website
into consideration. I will try to use
the resources from the library that are given on the John Carroll website. I have used most of the databases that are
available previously for some other projects that I have done for my high
school. If for some reason I cannot find
what I am looking for I will go to the library reference desk and ask for
help.

Discussion questions 11/6
1.)
My opinionated answer to the question in the
article is that video games are good for people to interact within a story and
the ability to make choices that will make the story evolve. Tom Bissell talks about having an “extra life”
in his book Extra Lives: Why Video Games
Matter. Why do you play video games?
(why don’t you play video games?)
2.)
Why do you think that people that play video
games ignore the systemic social issues in the games that they play?
3.)
Of the
video games that we played in the last class, did you notice anything different
or similar about those games compared to other more popular games that you have
played before?

Our
social action project accurately defines the affects of internet privacy
issues. We warn the reader of how many
things that could happen to anyone at any time.
The reason for this happening can rely on both the users and the
companies that own these sites. There are
kind of two sides for our issue. On one
hand you can blame the users, saying that they should really think about what
they post or put on face book. Whatever
they put on the internet is there forever.
The companies could also say that there are in fact privacy settings,
but most users just choose not to use them.
On the other hand, the users could fight back and say that there is no
reason that our personal information such as our social security numbers, credit
card numbers, addresses, etc. I know for
a fact that sometimes there is no other choice than to put your social security
number online for a job application or even getting into college. It seems like we are getting more and more involved
with the internet with everything we do and that can be a good thing, but I believe
that some things should not just be thrown out there. I believe that if someone is fired because they
post a picture of themselves doing something inappropriate, their boss should
decide whether or not they want them in their company. With that being said, I think that there
really is no excuse for someone’s identity being stolen because they had put
all of their personal information online because they were forced to for a job
or school. I really think that falls on
the hands of the companies. In an
article on pcworld.com, there is a list of the biggest online privacy
threats. Their list was from one to
five: 1.) cookie
proliferation, 2.) seizing cloud data 3.) location data betrayal 4.) data never
forgets a face 5.) scanning in the name of cyber security. My opinion of this article is that it really
boils down to numbers 1 and 2. I think
that cookie proliferation seems like it’s no big deal and everyone just clicks
yes or allow. I think that this is a
really big issue and it needs to be altered somehow for the better. Seizing cloud data is definitely another
issue that I really haven’t thought about a big threat to privacy. I thought
that something like this would be safe. These
“surprises” only feed our social action project and prove its relevance.

My social action project group is focusing on the problems
with privacy through facebook and the overall internet in general. This article shows a study from a pretty well
known magazine Consumer reports. It shows that almost everything that
someone does on facebook can be used harmfully towards you in some way. They can take some little piece of
information that doesn’t seem important or seem like burglars or identity
thieves can do anything with it, but as Consumer
reports shows these small pieces of information can make or break something
happening. One example that really
shocked me and kind of stood out of the rest was that if you “like” a facebook
page about health conditions or treatments, an insurer can use that “like”
against you. Now I find that a
completely wrong thing to do. I think
that most of the time people who like a page about health conditions or
treatments, it is trying to promote a good cause like bringing awareness to
breast cancer or something like that. I would
never have thought that something like this could happen. Another interesting example that was in the
article was that 4.8 million have
used Facebook to say where they planned to go on a certain day. I know that this does happen a lot. I have seen and witnessed people do this over
and over again. I think that if you want
everybody know where you are going, then you should already know the
consequences for letting the world know where you are going, especially if you
are alone. This is just another reason
why I do not use social media. I think
that privacy is important and if I want to tell people where I am going I can
call them, without telling the whole world.

http://www.whas11.com/home/12-examples-of-people-getting-fired-over-Facebook-101977118.html
I now found out that for my Social Action Project I will be
working in my group trying to achieve awareness to the dangers and downsides of
exposing to much information on facebook.
We are going to do this through book inserts in the Grasseli library. I am glad I got picked for this group because I
thought it was a good idea. For my
weblog today, I am doing an article on the same kind of topic and the article
gives 12 instances that people got fired because of what they posted on
facebook or some other kind of social media.
My opinion is that the people who are posting these things on social
media deserve what they got. For example,
I don’t understand why in the world you would post a picture of yourself at a graffiti
party with your friends passed out with swastikas and anti-Semitic remarks on
their foreheads? I think it is almost
common knowledge now that your boss of future boss is looking for exact
instances on their employees. In fact a
relative of mine has a job where that’s all he does is look on people’s social
media and decides whether or not to hire them even before he has an interview
with them. I think that this will highly
effect the workforce and I think it will be a good improvement for most
companies. I think if I were put into
the position of whether or not to monitor what my employees do, I would have to say that I would monitor
their social media. This not only makes
them think what they are posting, but it creates a kind of reality to what they
are really putting online that can be tracked and traced to their name
forever. I think that the fact that it
is there forever is the bigger deal.

Weblog 10/4 Ewaste video
http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/ghana804/video/video_index.html
This video shows the crazy amounts of terrible things happen
to our old electronics that most of us in the United States and other prominent
countries don’t even know about. We send
our “junk” over to these countries so that other people risk their lives every
day for terrible wages by burning these electronics so they can gather the
metals and actually make some money. The
video is so sad especially the part where the man who is burning the material
says that it makes him sick and he knows that but if he doesn’t he won’t make
any money so he continues to ruin his health.
What I think is one of the most important things for people to
understand, especially for those who will say that,” it’ll only hurt them and
not us” is that it is hurting us. It is
ruining the whole world and our planet. It
burns the atmosphere and its killing the trees, the animals, the plants, and it
is effecting how we breathe.
The part where I don’t understand is how China’s leaders
allow all of this hazardous waste in their country. I know for a fact that the United States
would never allow something like this to happen here. I can’t believe that there are people in
China simply ignoring this because of money.
With everything being said, the economic point of view is
that it is nearly impossible to take care of this ecologically friendly. It would cost so much that it is not worth
it. I think that the only way that e
waste can be handled correctly is through some kind of volunteer work and
donations to develop factories like Pucketts in India that was talked about in
the video.

Weblog 9/27- http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/03/technology-is-not-the-answer/73065/
http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/03/technology-is-not-the-answer/73065/
What I got out of this article is that technology can be
used to make certain things that are possible without technology better, and
things that aren’t possible without technology that is still very difficult to
make happen. In other words I think what
the writer was trying to say is that technology is great and has its purposes,
but it cannot solve every problem in the universe. There is a graph in this article that I thought
was quite interesting. It shows that
with the increase in technology, the increase in poverty rates also
increase. What I got out of this graph
is that even when we bring technology into areas of poverty, the rate of
poverty does not change the rate of poverty in the United States. I would have thought, prior to looking at
this graph that the poverty rate would have dropped with the advancements of
technology. I am extremely surprised
that this is the case not only from a technology standpoint, but just because I
thought we would have a better idea of this problem of poverty. Poverty is a different kind of problem than
say something like robberies in the United States or a network not being on a
certain cable provider. What I mean is
robberies are definitely important and something to look to stop, but I think
that poverty affects the whole world. I think
that poverty is a very important issue. However,
I do think that technology will have some kind of role in the rate of poverty
in the future.

9/20 Weblog-http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2011/06/the-twitter-effect-how-social-media-changes-the-news-narrative179/
http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2011/06/the-twitter-effect-how-social-media-changes-the-news-narrative179/
The second part of this article really interested me the
most because I sort of have a connection to this subject. The same reason that this article writes
about is why I do not have any sort of social media. I think that social media can be cool,
interesting, and useful, but I believe that it does more harm than good
especially when things can be so distorted and become a totally different
story. I remember when Ryan Dunn had
died and I do believe that twitter and social media had spread the word
incorrectly, and this lead to some very cruel and offensive things that were
said by famous people. Roger Ebert, a
famous film critic even tweeted," Friends don’t let Jackasses drink and
drive,”. Obviously, it was supposed to
be a joke, but I guarantee that this guy would never say this to one of Ryan
Dunn’s friends or family members face. So
I think that twitter and all other social media enables us to act differently
than we would in real life and I think it can will continue to lead to people
saying things that they definitely regret putting out there for the whole world
to see forever. I think that most of the
time people do this without thinking and it can be a true mistake, but I also
think that other people do put things out there simply because they can and I don’t
think that it is right to take advantage of the power of the internet and
social media. Because that I think I will
become a different person in the social media world I will try not to get
involved as much as I can.

Weblog A-1 E-Waste from greenpeace
I'm doing my assignment on the e-waste article/ video because
I am familiar with the topic and wasn't really surprised by what goes on with
this stuff. I am mostly not surprised because
I have already done projects, readings, essays, and everything else about
e-waste and how bad it really is. What I
don’t understand is how this happens when there are blatant facts that this will
not only affect the people doing this and their life longevity, it will also
harm people miles down the road. From what
I have read in previous classes, the chemicals and toxins that are released can
condensate and go into the ground through rain showers miles away, meanwhile
destroying the atmosphere and contaminating the water cycle everywhere. With all of that being said, there is really
no way other than to do this that would make sense economically. I think that the best option is to take all
of the “recycled” electronic items and to send them to “actual” recycle plants
where people are paid to create new devices, hard drives, cameras, cell phone
parts, and whatever else and then take them to a Best Buy or HHgregg and sell
those as refurbished items. I believe with today’s technology this is
possible, (not really sure), but even if it was possible, it would never happen
because it is simply easier to send it off to some place where children are
exposing themselves to poisonous gases, burning our mess to make $1.50 a
day. I still don’t like to believe that
this goes on, but the more I think that, the more I see it in articles.
